Brendan Rodgers provided a fitness report on Glen Johnson and Daniel Sturridge after the Reds maintained their 100 per cent opening to the season with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

Johnson was replaced by Andre Wisdom with 12 minutes remaining at Anfield, while Sturridge continues to work towards full fitness after missing much of the summer with an ankle problem.

On the former, the Northern Irishman said: "He took a bad knock - he turned onto his ankle.

"He's getting treatment at the moment. It's obviously quite bad for him to come off, but I'll just need to see after."

Sturridge provided the decisive contribution for the third Barclays Premier League fixture running, diverting a Daniel Agger flick-on beyond United goalkeeper David De Gea after three minutes.

"I'm delighted with his application because he was nowhere near fit today," Rodgers said.

"He played a full game and extra-time during the week and he had a slight knock on his thigh.

"But this is what we've been speaking to him about - just putting yourself out there. Even at 70 per cent he'll be as good as - if not better than - a lot of Premier League strikers, so you've got to find the will and desire to want to push yourself.

"He did that today and got his reward for it. He showed great anticipation coming off the 'keeper for the goal and always when he's on the pitch he can be a threat.

"There's no doubting his qualities. It was another goal for him and another clean sheet, which was very good for us."

The 24-year-old, who celebrates his birthday today, has been selected in Roy Hodgson's England squad for a crucial World Cup qualifying double-header later this month.

Asked whether Sturridge will still be available for those matches, the boss added: "We just need to assess it afterwards.

"He'd played [in midweek] and wasn't sure whether he was going to make it for the game. He'd struggled in the last couple of days, but he put himself out there and we'll just see how it is.

"We need to make sure we're thinking of Liverpool first. I would suspect with his quality, Roy will be looking at him to maybe being a starter - but priority will be Liverpool.

"We need to make sure he's okay - and if he is then he'll go."
