Brendan Rodgers collected the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Month award on Friday and instantly sent a message of appreciation to his players and staff for their support.

The Northern Irishman's team recorded three consecutive victories to start their league campaign, seeing off Stoke City, Aston Villa and Manchester United by the same scoreline - 1-0.

Progress to the third round of the Capital One Cup, and an immediate rematch with United, was secured too with a 4-2 extra-time victory over Notts County at Anfield.

After joining Daniel Sturridge to receive his prize - the 24-year-old striker was also named Player of the Month - Rodgers revealed why the credit should go to his squad.

The boss told the Liverpool Echo: "I'm obviously very honoured but it's one where I receive the award on behalf of the players.

"Not just over the past month but ever since I've come in here they have been absolutely first-class in their commitment and focus to what we are trying to do here.

"From the first day of pre-season they reclaimed the mentality from last season. You cannot do it without your players and they have been absolutely brilliant. It's a reward for them.

"It's also great reward for all the staff at the football club, not just here at Melwood, but across the board. There is very much a one-club mentality.

"The start we've made has been culmination of a lot of work which has gone on over pre-season right across the club.

"People have worked tirelessly in order to get the club working well. It's been a real collective effort.

"It's been a terrific start to the season for us. We know there is a long, long way to go but our objective in pre-season was to make a good start and we couldn't have made a better one."
