As part of a drive to increase awareness of sudden cardiac death and its implications to the female athlete, a team from John Moores University recently conducted cardiac screening of the Liverpool Ladies team.

Sudden cardiac death in young athletes is a tragic event, which can have a huge impact on the family, the team and the wider community. As a result, professor John Somauroo, Dr David Oxborough and professor Keith George provided the LFC Ladies with cardiac screening for each player.

The ladies all passed the tests with flying colours and the team can now continue their hard work and training in preparation for their WSL title-decider against Bristol Academy on Sunday.

Dr Zafar Iqbal, Liverpool's head of medicine, said: "As one of the leading experts on cardiology screening in athletes, we are fortunate to have the services of professor John Somauroo and his team.

"Liverpool Ladies go through the same stringent cardiology screening as the men's team, as the safety of the athlete is paramount."
