When Brendan Rodgers offers Andre Wisdom the opportunity to play at right-back for Liverpool, the 20-year-old does not wait long to provide the boss with an answer.

The England U21 international has largely operated at full-back for the Reds' senior team, while his appearances at youth level for both club and country have often involved a switch to the centre.

Wisdom himself, however, has no preference regarding the position he plays - if it means he gets ongoing chances to pull on a Liverpool shirt.

"I just appreciate playing, if it's right-back or centre-back it doesn't really bother me," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I played most of my youth career at centre-back so I would say that's my position. But obviously if Brendan Rodgers comes to me and says I'm playing right-back this week, I'm not going to say 'No I'm not, I'm playing centre-back'.

"I'm just going to get on with it and do it. Hopefully I can give all I can in any position I'm asked to play. There's always a chance, even if everyone is fit.

"The manager makes us work very hard and if you perform well in training and show the right attitude when given an opportunity to make the position yours, he'll play you no matter what your age is.

"He showed everyone that last season and is giving opportunities this season also. It's great to be around the team and to be playing if I'm chosen or on the bench or in the squad."

With Rodgers adding no fewer than four defenders to his squad during the summer - Aly Cissokho, Tiago Ilori, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure - the Northern Irishman planned to send Wisdom out on loan to gain experience.

An injury to Glen Johnson on the penultimate day of the transfer window forced a re-think, but the No.47 remains open to any options which will allow further development of his career.

Wisdom said: "We've signed a few more defenders and it's obviously going to be harder to get a spot in the team. But I've been given some time to play - it's appreciated and it has been good.

"Every player just wants to play week in, week out. A loan was going to be the best option for me to get that, get the experience I need, keep fit and play every week.

"I was looking forward to it but that's football and injuries happen. Glen picked up a serious injury against Manchester United; he is recovering quickly.

"I was thinking about going on loan - it didn't happen as soon as maybe I wanted it to, but it's good that I'm still here.

"My objectives are to try to keep myself involved, whether it's playing or on the bench or having an input by coming on if I'm needed.

"And to try to keep improving every day because it's a great environment to do that. That's all I can keep working on.

"I'm determined every day. I come to training and work hard every day, giving all that I can. Hopefully it will lead me on the right path.

"Obviously I need experience - I need more games because I'm still learning. Maybe if I am to go on loan and get that experience I need, I can try to be a key player in the team."

An additional positive to remaining at Melwood, of course, is the ability to study closely and receive advice from the likes of Glen Johnson and Toure.

Wisdom added: "Glen is a great guy, he's really calm and laid back. It's good to look up to him; on the pitch he says 'Go out and enjoy yourself' when I'm playing.

"If he's watching in training, he says 'Be calm and enjoy yourself, do the things that have got you here instead of trying to be someone you're not.'

"I really appreciate him saying that because you need qualities to play at any team. To play for Liverpool, you must be good enough. If you just keep playing and improving on what you're good at, you'll continue.

"Glen is a great guy; I see him walking now without his boot on so that's good. I wish him all the best when he comes back.

"Kolo is a great player and great mentor also. He's got a wealth of experience playing at some of the best teams in the Premier League.

"He passes on information every day. He's a bit similar to Jamie Carragher but so different. He's a great person to work with."
