Sturridge hands over Shankly history
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge handed over a small piece of history to a member of Bill Shankly's family at Melwood on Thursday morning.
When the Reds played rivals Manchester United at Anfield on September 1, one day before the 100th anniversary of the legendary Scot's birth, the club paid a series of tributes - including a memorable mosaic held aloft on the Kop.
The match ball from that Sunday, which fittingly featured a 1-0 victory for the home side, was passed onto Jenny Carline - granddaughter of Shankly - by match-winner Sturridge.
"It was absolutely amazing, an amazing feeling and a real honour to meet him," Jenny said after the presentation at the club's training complex.
"Especially with it being the Liverpool v Manchester United ball, it was even better. It has all changed since the last time I was here. It has been a really good morning.
"It was going to stay with me but I've decided to give it to my brother, Chris. He has worked really hard on the charity and all the events that have gone on for the 100 years for my granddad.
"I'm really proud of him; if anyone deserves it, he does. It can go on display in his house."
In the week of the 100th anniversary last month, Chris Carline formed the Shankly Family Foundation - a charity organisation aiming to support grassroots football and young people.
