Daniel Agger admits he was left overwhelmed by the level of support he received from Maltese Liverpool supporters on a recent visit to the country with Denmark.

The Reds' vice-captain was with his nation for a World Cup qualifier in Malta on September 6 - a game he helped them win 2-1.

However, the trip was made all the more memorable for Agger thanks to the welcome he was afforded by Kopites on the island.

The 28-year-old was given a hero's welcome at the airport and Danish team hotel - and he duly responded by taking time out to sign autographs and pose for photos.

Maltese Liverpool fan Clive Calleja was among those who met Agger, and then contacted the official Liverpool FC Supporters' Committee, who brought it to the attention of the club.

Clive said: "Although Malta is a small island with a small population, there is a huge fan base of Liverpool supporters who welcomed our vice-captain with a huge reception.

"Fans were waiting for him at the airport as soon as they landed, went to the hotel they were residing in and also attended training sessions in order to meet Daniel Agger.

"He did not disappoint a single Maltese fan.  He took photos with anyone who asked at the various places and signed every single item that was put in front of him."

Agger himself admits he was bowled over by the support - and has a special message for the club's fans in Malta.

He said: "The support we received in Malta when I was over there recently with the national team for a World Cup qualifier was fantastic as both a Denmark and Liverpool player.

"As soon as we touched down at the airport I could see a lot of fans were waiting for us, especially a lot of fans in Liverpool colours. They were also outside the hotel, at the training sessions and it's likely they were all at the game on the night as well.

"Our Maltese fans were incredibly passionate and are just as important as all the others back home. It always amazes me the support we have across the world so it is no trouble at all to sign a few autographs and pose for some pictures.

"I'm glad they all enjoyed it and I look forward to going back there in the future.

Liverpool FC Supporters' Committee representative, Laurie Whitehead, said: "It is wonderful to see yet again just how popular LFC remains, reflecting the truly worldwide appeal of the club.

"For so many of our fans to greet Daniel in such a way when he is representing his country, not even our club, is great to see and shows that we really do have the best supporters in the world.

"I have always believed that our fans, together with our unrivalled heritage and history, are what makes us great."
