Rush: Sturridge should aim for 20 plus
Ian Rush has backed Daniel Sturridge to continue his ruthless streak in front of goal and smash through the 20-strike barrier by the end of the current campaign.
The England forward has already netted seven in eight Barclays Premier League games this season.
His header against Newcastle on Saturday made him the quickest player to hit 20 career goals for Liverpool since Fred Pagnam reached the landmark after 22 matches in 1915.
Rush, who knew a thing or two about finding the back of the net, believes Sturridge has the potential to achieve more goalscoring feats over the coming months.
"Daniel has come to Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers has given him so much confidence," he told the Liverpool Echo.
"He always had potential. We always knew that he was a good player; otherwise you don't play for Manchester City and Chelsea.
"Every time he plays he looks like he is going to score. And he excites people when he's on the pitch.
"Daniel has got to be looking for between 20 and 30 goals this season. And I think him playing regularly for England is also going to help him for Liverpool."
Sturridge's partnership with Luis Suarez has captured the imagination of Kopites and pundits alike since the Uruguayan returned to the fold in late September.
Their combination yielded another goal in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle, when intricate play from Suarez gifted Sturridge an easy finish to level the scores at St James' Park.
Rush believes there's more to come from the deadly duo. He explained: "When you look at the two of them together it makes me laugh when people say they can't play together.
"They have an understanding and you only have to look back to the Newcastle game to see that.
"They are always looking for each other and are getting better as a partnership every time they play.
"And you always feel as though at least one of them will score."
