A website dedicated to the criminal inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster has gone live.

Operation Resolve's website - www.operationresolve.co.uk - aims to give people a clearer understanding of the role of the inquiry and the work of the team.

A free phone number has also been launched to allow members of the public to contact the investigation and speak to a member of the team.

Operation Resolve was launched in December 2012 by the home secretary Theresa May following the publication of a report by the Hillsborough Independent Panel. The investigation aims to prove or disprove that 96 people were unlawfully killed on April 15, 1989.

The officer in overall command, assistant commissioner Jon Stoddart, said: "This is one of the biggest criminal investigations in English policing history and the levels of interest in our inquiry are unprecedented.

"Although we must always protect the integrity of the criminal justice and legal system, it is of great importance to us that we are open and transparent in our work.

"We have been able to build up excellent professional relationships with many of the families of the deceased and their legal representatives and they are greatly assisting our inquiry.

"However, people across the country were touched by the events of April 15, 1989 and continue to want to understand exactly what happened. The Operation Resolve website will provide the public with a single point of reference where they can access a variety of information about our investigation. Many of the questions they may have will be answered on the website."
