Suarez: It was all about the team
Luis Suarez made every attempt to step out of the spotlight after illuminating White Hart Lane with a dazzling captain's display in Liverpool's 5-0 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur.
The Uruguayan assumed the role of skipper in the absence of Steven Gerrard and vice-captain Daniel Agger on Sunday evening - and was simply scintillating from start to finish.
He scythed open Spurs early on by tip-toeing past two players on the edge of the penalty area and passing the ball beyond Hugo Lloris for 1-0.
Goals from Jordan Henderson and Jon Flanagan followed before Suarez weighed in with a delicate lob for the fourth and Raheem Sterling sealed the rout in the 89th minute.
Afterwards, Suarez played down his performance as stand-in skipper, choosing instead to lavish his teammates - in particular Flanagan - with the plaudits.
"It was no different, because for me, there is only one captain here at Liverpool and that is Stevie," Suarez told Sky Sports.
"Today I took the armband, but the team played very well and that is more important to me than being the captain.
"I try my best on the pitch. I'm the striker and I play all the time to help the squad, but today the most important thing was the performance of the team.
"We played well in the first half and then in the second half, we were well-positioned. Also, when Flanno scored, it was a happy moment for us.
"We know in December that we have some very big games. The win is very good for our confidence."
Defeat to Hull City at the start of the month clearly riled the Barclays Premier League's leading goalscorer, who was powerless to prevent Liverpool slipping to a sobering 3-1 loss on Humberside.
In what is fast becoming a rarity nowadays, Suarez was almost entirely subdued at the KC Stadium - and after such a disappointment, the forward resolved to not let it happen again.
Two games at Anfield followed, and Suarez plundered six goals in front of the Kop against Norwich City and West Ham United.
At White Hart Lane tonight, he added two more exquisite strikes to his collection to help steer Brendan Rodgers' side to their first win at the Lane since May 2008.
"When you play badly, you try to forget it quickly," insisted Suarez. "When we lost against Hull, we knew that we played very badly.
"We had two chances after that when we played at home [against Norwich City and West Ham United] and now we have won here, so it gives us more confidence for the rest of the season."
