As they prepare to start their FA Cup campaign on Sunday, John Achterberg has shared a sense of the determination within the Liverpool camp to be victorious in every competition they enter.

Brendan Rodgers' side will begin their challenge for an eighth FA Cup triumph today when they host the side who eliminated them from last season's tournament - League One outfit Oldham Athletic.

Ahead of the encounter at Anfield, goalkeeping coach Achterberg explained why an extended run in the world-renowned knockout competition is of the utmost importance for everyone at the club.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: "Any competition Liverpool are in is important, and there's no competition Liverpool will be in not to be there to try and win.

"Liverpool is too big of a club, they are one of the best teams in the world, so they have to challenge for every competition.

"I think for every player and for every member of staff it's the same as every competition - we want to win and try to do well. People expect Liverpool to win every game and that's the pressure we have to handle and try to deal with.

"I used to watch the FA Cup on television back in Holland because the final was always on at the end of the season; I remember when two Dutch players were in the final, with Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen, and that was the first one I probably watched.

"We would love to get to the final and win. It would be great, but first of all there's a big game on Sunday against a team we didn't do well against last season, so we need to make sure we prepare right this time and make sure we are ready to deal with Oldham.

"I think the manager is very up for it as he wants to try and get to any final. He wants to succeed, as does everyone else in the squad and the staff - we all want to succeed. So that means you want to win every game and you want to get to every final if we can."

Sunday's opponents stunned the Reds at Boundary Park 12 months ago, condemning Rodgers' charges to a 3-2 defeat which caught supporters completely by surprise.

The manager insists lessons have been learned from that match, and although the Reds have now won seven consecutive matches on home soil, Achterberg promised there will be no complacency.

The Dutchman added: "Everyone knows in English football there is no easy game and if you think you are going to be in for an easy game then you give yourself a chance to be in trouble.

"I think every player knows the same thing and everyone has been here before, so we will all be switched on and try and win the game.

"Cup games are different to league games and when teams play from a lower league they play freely with no pressure, so they can go with confidence to try and win the game.

"They have nothing to lose and we have seen it before. They will be up for it but hopefully we will be ready to deal with that and try to get to the next round."
