Brendan Rodgers has celebrated Liverpool's status as the leading scorers in England's top flight, but at the same time challenged his charges to continue their explosive form in front of the posts.

The Reds have clocked up 70 goals in 27 games, and are in contention to beat Chelsea's all-time record in the Barclays Premier League, which was set in the 2009-10 season.

By the same stage of that campaign, the Blues had netted 63 times en route to accumulating a tally of 103.

Led by the lethal Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, Liverpool are also just seven efforts shy of their best-ever goal return in the league, posted in 2008-09.

When asked about his side's irrepressible attacking, Rodgers explained it is a collaborative undertaking.

"It's all about the collective," he commented. "I think the goals we've scored and how strong our attack has been is about the entire squad.

"We've put in some outstanding performances over the last couple of weeks and have been exciting to watch going forward."

The manager admitted that bolstering the club's attacking ethos was a major part of his blueprint when he arrived at Anfield in June 2012.

"When I came in here, I had a task of improving the movement going forward and that has been achieved and we will continue to work on it," the Northern Irishman added.

"As the squad grows and gets stronger, all aspects of the team's play will improve. We will continue to work increasingly hard in training every day and do remedial work after games.

"Even when we won 4-0 in the derby game at home, we still found areas to improve, so whether the score is that or 4-3, there's always room to improve."

Most goals scored by Liverpool in a Premier League season
2008-09 - 77
2000-01 - 71
2012-13 - 71
1995-96 - 70
2013-14* - 70

For all the Reds' distinction in foraying forward, there are still defensive indiscretions to fix and again, Rodgers maintained it is down to the entire squad to eradicate the errors.

The boss said: "It's not about any one player in this team so if we score 70 goals and are the highest scorers, it's about the entire squad.

"The attackers have been given a platform to go on and create, and if we concede it means we haven't pressed well enough at the top of the field - so it's a group effort.

"There isn't a question about the character in the team; they've shown resilience to come back and win games that we would have lost a year ago.

"It's just about strengthening the composure and concentration in the games. It's not just about the back four and the 'keeper, it's the team. If we defend well as a team, then we attack well as a team."

Liverpool's current total of 56 points after 27 league fixtures is the highest in the club's history, and the Reds will be eager to extend their haul against Southampton on Saturday.

Rodgers ascribed the club's incredible progress under his tutelage to an aspiration for continuous improvement.

"We have been creating a culture for players to improve in, and to have honest appraisal of performances after every game," the 41-year-old explained.

"It takes lots of hard work from the technical team, all the staff, and the players to keep pushing and wanting to get better.

"There's also a great unity; when we score, everyone is happy and celebrates in it. Equally when we defend well, there's camaraderie around it.

"You have to get everyone to buy into the ideology you have - for them to know it's not about any individual, but the collective, and we have that here."
