Daniel Sturridge transferred his goalscoring form from club to country in the highlight of an evening when 14 Liverpool players were on duty with their national teams on Wednesday.

Six Liverpool players lined up for kick-off in the encounter between England and Denmark at Wembley; Steven Gerrard captained the Three Lions and Glen Johnson won his 50th cap.

Fellow Reds Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Sturridge also started for Roy Hodgson's team, while defender Daniel Agger was skipper for the visitors in London.

Henderson was withdrawn with a quarter of an hour remaining, before Sturridge struck the only goal of the game on 81 minutes, leaping highest to head home a cross by Adam Lallana and hand the hosts a 1-0 victory.

Speaking to ITV post-match, the 24-year-old reflected: "It doesn't matter where I play on the field, I have to make a difference and make an impact by helping the team to get goals and assists, regardless of the position I'm in. It's about the team and doing a job for the team."

On club teammate Sterling in particular, Sturridge added: "He played very well. Raheem will keep getting better; he's young and everybody knows what he can do. I certainly know what he can do from playing with him at club level. He'll get better and better."

Luis Suarez played the full 90 minutes as Uruguay recovered from a deficit to draw 1-1 with Austria.

Reds midfielder Joe Allen featured throughout Wales' encounter with Iceland in Cardiff; the home side ran out 3-1 winners.

In Brussels, Kolo Toure clocked up 90 minutes for Ivory Coast as the African heavyweights claimed a late 2-2 draw against Belgium. Simon Mignolet, meanwhile, was an unused substitute.

Martin Skrtel completed 66 minutes of Slovakia's 3-1 victory over Israel.

Goalkeeper Brad Jones was introduced for the final half-hour of Australia's action-packed friendly with Ecuador, in which the South American side battled from three goals down to win 4-3.
