Glen Johnson believes he benefited from familiarity as England beat Denmark 1-0 at Wembley on Wednesday night.

The full-back was one of five Liverpool players selected in the starting XI by Roy Hodgson, joining Anfield counterparts Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling.

"Having five Liverpool players obviously helped me," Johnson reflected afterwards. "The more you play together, the more you understand each other on the pitch.

"Sturridge and Sterling have been sensational this season. They're two fantastic players and they've learned from playing every week and are improving all the time.

"They weren't that involved in the qualifying games and at the start of the season they might not have been considered as World Cup contenders.

"But they've done their talking on the pitch and are flying at the moment. So they definitely deserve to be playing."

Reflecting on the win, which was secured by Sturridge's late goal in the capital, Johnson added: "It's an important step towards the World Cup.

"You want to win as many games as you can in the build-up, get the momentum going. There are only three or four more games before Brazil so this was an important game.

We've only been together two or three days so it's important we get back to winning ways, especially in front of our own supporters. We're heading in the right direction."
