Liverpool and the club's official charity Liverpool FC Foundation, welcomed more than 100 pupils from local schools across the city to Anfield yesterday for Show Racism the Red Card's Anti-Racism Educational Event.

Former Reds Neil Mellor and Howard Gayle and Liverpool Ladies stars Libby Stout and Danielle Gibbons joined the youngsters to promote a very important message.

Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is an educational charity, which uses football to convey a strong anti-racism message to young people.

It runs over 40 events at different clubs throughout the season, educating youngsters on the dangers of racism.

The event, which was sponsored by Liverpool City Council and Sefton CVS, brought together local school pupils with current and former players to take part in an anti-racism workshop, an interactive session and watch a screening of the SRtRC film.

Premier League referee Chris Foy and MP for Liverpool Walton, Steve Rotheram were also present at the event, while Mighty Red, the Club's official mascot, was also on hand to hand out prizes to the top three pupils who asked the panel the best questions.

Mark Haig, head of operations at Liverpool FC Foundation, said: "We run a range of equality and inclusion programmes in local communities across the world that encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to come together though sport.

"It is so important to educate people about racism and the damage it can cause and teach people to recognise and celebrate difference. All of our programmes promote community cohesion and we work closely with key partners both locally and internationally to continue to develop this."

Chief executive of Show Racism the Red Card, Ged Grebby, added: "We believe education is vital in tackling inter-generational racism which is why we are delighted that Liverpool agreed to host one of our education events.

"We hope that this event has had a positive impact on all the young people who attended."
