Wayne Rooney has hailed Luis Suarez as one of the finest players on the planet, placing the Uruguayan in the same bracket as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rooney, who will line up against Liverpool for the 22nd time in his career at Old Trafford on Sunday, also reserved special praise for Suarez's strike partner, Daniel Sturridge.

Between them, the prolific duo have hit 45 goals in all competitions this season, propelling the Reds into second place in the Barclays Premier League table - 11 points clear of Manchester United.

Speaking to MUTV, Rooney pin-pointed the pair as the danger for his side - and urged his teammates to be on guard ahead of the eagerly anticipated clash.

He said: "Suarez, for me, is up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the best players in the world.

"He has been that good and the two of them [Suarez and Sturridge] together have been in great form this season. We will have to do everything we can to stop them on Sunday.

"I think they are both fantastic players and obviously it is good to see Sturridge doing well because he has never really had a chance at his previous clubs.

"Brendan Rodgers has given him a chance and he has taken it with both hands. That is good for England as well."
