Rodgers: 100 goals would be incredible
With a century of Barclays Premier League goals in sight for his free-scoring Liverpool side this season, Brendan Rodgers has labelled the potential feat as 'incredible'.
Having played 30 matches in the 2013-14 campaign, the Reds have struck the target a remarkable 82 times, surpassing their previous record in the current era with eight fixtures still to play.
Rodgers' team will attempt to maintain their average of 2.73 goals per game - and edge closer to the magical 100 mark - when they host Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The exploits have not come as a surprise to the Northern Irishman, though, after the boss watched his charges knock half-a-dozen past Cardiff City at the weekend.
"That would be an incredible feat if we could achieve it," he told the Liverpool Echo. "I haven't been surprised by the number of goals we've scored as it's how we work.
"It's our mentality. Every day we do lots of exercises on penetration and movement, and being aggressive in our attack.
"We have quality players who can do that. The self-confidence of the group has improved immensely. Now as a group we don't get down easily in games, even when we go behind."
There was perfect evidence of that in Wales on Saturday, as the Bluebirds gained an advantage on two separate occasions in the first half at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Back came Liverpool, however, and the determined mentality Rodgers feels is continuing to grow within his team prompted a stylish turnaround en route to a 6-3 victory.
He added: "If you look at the Cardiff game, we weren't as aggressive in our defending at the start of the game and that led to too many spaces.
"But we stayed calm and composed. If you look at our first goal, there were 27 passes in that move. In the second half we had a lot more control of the game with the improvements in our passing.
"We still have a way to go in terms of developing this side. But one thing we have is a real optimism going into every game that we can create and score goals, and win.
"It gives me great pride to see the team fashion up this mentality which they can now take into games."
