Jordan Henderson believes the sense of togetherness which runs deep within the current Liverpool squad was there for all to see during the gruelling 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

Goals have been in constant supply at Anfield this season as underdogs and rivals have been carved up in equal measure by dazzling displays from Brendan Rodgers' side.

However, the Reds were forced to fight for every inch against Gus Poyet's well-drilled Black Cats on Wednesday, who were staunch in their defending and determined to spark a comeback on the night.

Steven Gerrard's curling free-kick and Daniel Sturridge's deflected second-half strike looked to have set Liverpool on the way to another commanding victory.

The chances then rained down at both ends, with Sturridge and Lee Cattermole rattling the crossbar before Luis Suarez plucked a pass out of the air, thundered inside and fired beyond the post.

When Ki Sung-Yeung halved the deficit in the 76th minute, Anfield was primed for a nervy finish - but the Reds' battling spirit was ultimately rewarded with the perfect prize - a priceless three points.

"It was a very important victory," Henderson told Liverpoolfc.com. "We knew it was going to be a big victory if we got it and we knew Sunderland were coming to make it difficult, which they did.

"I thought we dominated the game first half. We had a lot of possession. In the second half, I think we started well, got the goal and we were probably a little bit too comfortable at times and we were maybe a little bit sloppy on the ball.

"But the togetherness is there, we all get on really well. We'll all fight for each other - I think you can see that on the pitch.

"We're very demanding of each other and we want to help each other out. So if we just keep doing that and keep working hard, then our ability will come through."
