Liverpool's position at the top of the Barclays Premier League table may be a talking point for supporters and pundits alike, but it won't be a factor for the players when they kick off against West Ham United on Sunday.

The Reds will return to action seven days on from the stunning 4-0 dismantling of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield - a result that sent them to the summit with six games remaining.

However, Mignolet insists the tried and tested mantra of focusing only on the next game isn't just cliché, it's something that has been put into practice all week long at Melwood.

"For us, it is another game to look forward to," he told Liverpoolfc.com from the club's training complex. "We relish the game and hope to do well again, like we've done in the other games.

"It's going to be a different scenario on Sunday - it's going to be different to a game we play at home against Tottenham - but it's a challenge we'll look forward to, embrace it and hope to get the three points."

Mignolet added: "We're just trying our best in every game we play, really. It doesn't make any difference for us where we are in the table - there are three to points to win or three points to lose on Sunday, and we'll look at it that way.

"In the Premier League, every single game is difficult, and away to West Ham we know what we're going to be up against, but we'll do our best and prepare ourselves in training this week to make sure we're there to do our jobs come kick-off on Sunday."

Newspapers, social media, websites and TV channels have been awash with coverage of Liverpool's climb to first place in the table, but Mignolet is adamant what's being written and said about the Reds will have no impact on the players and their preparations.

"As a football player, you have to accept it," he considers. "That's society and the world we live in. Those things are normal to us.

"It's just about doing our jobs and working hard on the training pitch during the week to make sure we're ready to play the game in the manner we've played all of our other games in the Premier League this season.

"Basically, this game against West Ham is no different to the first game of the season we played against Stoke, so in that sense we'll take it on in the same way we did in the first game we played this season at Anfield."

West Ham head into the contest buoyed by back-to-back victories that have helped them climb into a mid-table position.

While aware they'll pose a tough test, Mignolet feels Liverpool's primary focus is on making sure they get their own game going first.

He said: "At home, they'll obviously look forward to playing against us. They also have a few players who used to play for Liverpool, so I'm sure they'll be up for it.

"The fans will be behind their team with the results they've had in the last few games, so they'll be tough opposition.

"But for us, it's more about looking at ourselves and our own performance, rather than looking at the opposition. We want to do our things well, be focused on our jobs and how we want to play the game.

"That goes for me and I think it goes for the whole team."
