26 years on: Reds clinch 17th title
Today, April 23, we celebrate the 26th anniversary of Liverpool winning their 17th league title, under Kenny Dalglish in 1988.
The side was dubbed by many as one of the finest teams to ever grace Anfield, with John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, John Aldridge and co terrorising defences throughout the country.
At the start of the 1987-88 season, Dalglish had to rebuild his team, with star striker Ian Rush departing for Juventus.
Having already signed Rush look-a-like Aldridge, he needed players to provide service for the lethal Scouser.
In came record signing Beardsley and Barnes, and Dalglish had found an unstoppable force.
A 29-game unbeaten run in the top flight came to an end with defeat at Goodison Park to Everton of all teams, but with four games to go the title was sealed at Anfield.
Tottenham were the opposition and, such was the demand to see the champions-elect, the Kop was full an hour before kick-off.
A solitary strike from Beardsley against Terry Venables' side was enough to seal the championship and although the campaign was to end in frustration with the FA Cup final defeat to Wimbledon, that doesn't take away just what an awesome Liverpool team this was.
The game of the season was undoubtedly the 5-0 destruction of Nottingham Forest at Anfield and LFCTV GO subscribers can watch some classic footage from that night below, featuring the wizardry of Barnes at his very best.
