The impressive form of on-loan Liverpool forward Fabio Borini in 2013-14 was acknowledged with Sunderland's Young Player of the Year honour by Black Cats supporters on Tuesday.

At a presentation evening at the Stadium of Light, the Italian collected the prize - recognition for a campaign in which he has so far contributed seven goals to his temporary team's cause.

The 23-year-old, who was Brendan Rodgers' first signing as Reds boss in 2012, struck against both Chelsea and Manchester United during Sunderland's journey to the Capital One Cup final.

He then opened the scoring at Wembley by racing in behind the Manchester City defence and planting a swerving finish into the far corner, although the north-east side were ultimately beaten 3-1.

Borini has also found the target four times in the Barclays Premier League since joining Gus Poyet's outfit for a season last September, including strikes in two matches with their rivals, Newcastle United.

And, most recently, he did his parent club a favour by converting from the penalty spot to secure a surprise 2-1 victory for Sunderland over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

In his first year with Liverpool, the No.29 made 20 appearances and struck two goals, at home to Gomel in a Europa League qualifier and later in the season at Newcastle.
