Bond, Blaine & more: The season in quotes
Whether it was a comment on the pitch, a response during an interview or an answer in a press conference, the 2013-14 season was crammed with memorable quotes - here are some of our favourites...
"I've talked throughout pre-season about wanting to bring other players into the group, but this was one of - if not the - most important signings for us. He's an icon here at the football club - a real iconic figure for players and supporters."
Brendan Rodgers hailed the pre-season announcement that Steven Gerrard had signed a new contract with the club
"It's been incredible. Throughout this tour, I'll take this with me - even though we'll be miles away back home, the people in these three countries will always be in our hearts."
The boss took no shortage of inspiration from the Reds' tour to Indonesia, Australia and Thailand
"Top of the league, here we go!"
A quip from Rodgers on August 17
"It was the debut that you dream of. I had hoped to do something like that but you never really think that you will. Saving a penalty in the last minute of your first game for Liverpool is just amazing."
Summer signing Simon Mignolet kick-started the Reds' season by saving a penalty against Stoke
"We have been working so hard with the manager during pre-season. The spirit in the squad is very good and the mentality of all the players is great. We won as a team. It's fantastic for all the supporters and the players for us to start like this. It will give everyone a big lift. This win will be important for the future of this football club."
Fellow new recruit Kolo Toure made what would prove to be an accurate prediction after the Potters were beaten
"It is an honour and privilege to be asked to return to Liverpool as a director of the club. I have always said if there is anything I could do to help this club I would make myself available - when the call came I had no hesitation."
Kenny Dalglish sealed a return to the Reds as a non-executive director in October
"Kenny has a unique relationship with our supporters and embodies everything that is special about Liverpool. We are thrilled that the club will benefit from his experience, and passion for the club and our supporters. Kenny has a unique insight on the values and traditions that helped to make Liverpool one of the greatest sporting institutions, not just in football, but in world sport. We are proud and honoured to have him back at the club he has represented with such distinction."
John W Henry shared his delight with the news of the King's comeback
"I am delighted to have agreed a new deal with Liverpool and have my future secured for the long term. Without doubt the backing I have received from the Liverpool fans has influenced my decision. I am so proud to represent them and go out to do my best for them every time I pull on the shirt."
Luis Suarez gave Kopites an early Christmas gift by penning a new long-term deal
"I have fan tweets who say [the] Red Cafu is Flanagan at Liverpool. I must watch more Premier League to see both!"
So tweeted Brazilian legend Cafu on February 3; three months later, the World Cup winner visited Anfield to watch the No.38 in person
"To see a tweet from Cafu, someone I've looked up to, a brilliant right-back all of his life for Brazil, AC Milan and others - for him to comment on me is amazing really. You think: is it real and did he really tweet that? It's a great boost for me. Some fans call me stuff, some fans call me other stuff! But for him to notice me and say he's going to watch me is just brilliant. He's a legend in the game, so hopefully I can keep improving and maybe one day reach the top like he did."
In response, Jon Flanagan provided a typically down-to earth assessment
"Turn on the TV, LFC scores! You'll Never Walk Alone, baby! Liverpoooooool!"
A remarkable 5-1 triumph over Arsenal certainly caught the attention of actor Samuel L. Jackson
"The quality of his passing and the weight of his passes is sensational. And he's a good guy as well. His talent is remarkable. Every single day he does something that makes me think: 'Wow, what a talent'. If you go on to YouTube and see some of the little clips of him when he was young, 12 or 13, he's exactly the same."
The boss could not get enough of the innate ability of playmaker Philippe Coutinho
"To tell the truth, I hadn't heard about that! If I'm not mistaken he's a magician? David Blaine? I don't know, I guess it's cool for him to say that, but to tell the truth I hadn't heard about it."
Although the No.10 himself was unaware of the nickname given to him by teammate Daniel Sturridge
"He doesn't like it, but I call him that because he can do everything. On a day-to-day basis in training, you have to see it to believe what he can do with a football."
And the striker was at it again when he christened the captain 'James Bond'
"I don't go near him in training because if I do, there is only one winner. He's the toughest in our squad."
The skipper echoed explanations from the sports science team regarding the strength of Raheem Sterling
"I think Steven is just winding you up - I don't think he really means that! Obviously for a player of that calibre to be talking about your strength, it must be working. I have been working on my upper-body strength and my core work, and it has been working. I can't say I haven't been feeling the effects of it - I've been feeling much stronger and sharper."
The young forward felt the No.8 might have had his tongue in his cheek, however
"Suarez, for me, is up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the best players in the world."
The Uruguayan's remarkable form drew admiration throughout English football, and not least Wayne Rooney
"My daughter loves football, and she likes when I score a goal and celebrate. She loves princesses and things like that, but I can't do it [for a celebration] on the pitch! But she also likes Hulk, Spiderman and Superman. I told her when I score, I'd do a celebration like Hulk or Superman, so it's for her. She watches on TV and loves when I do it."
Liverpoolfc.com discovered the inspiration behind El Pistolero's new celebration
"A convincing win at Manchester United. LFC is the most exciting team to watch in football."
Principal owner, Henry, enjoyed what he saw as the Reds dismantled their rivals at Old Trafford
"Our idea was to play a bit longer, try to beat their press and leave two up top. If teams want to play two v two against Sturridge and Suarez...all the best!"
Gerrard sparked his first catchphrase of the campaign following the 3-0 victory at Southampton
"This is gone, we go to Norwich exactly the same...we go again."
The captain delivered an impassioned team-talk - and another mantra for the season - just seconds after Manchester City were beaten 3-2 at Anfield
"I think he is arguably the best young player in European football at the moment. He's a talent. He's got that in-built brain and belief he can be a good player. He's a really humble kid and it's been great to see."
Rodgers lauded the growing influence of Sterling after the 19-year-old inspired a vital victory at Carrow Road in April
"Whenever I'm not on work duty, I keep an eye on the Reds. I'm really excited. It's thrilling what's happening in the city right now. What they are doing at the moment is so admirable, the players, the coaches."
The excitement surrounding Liverpool's 11-match winning streak reached Spain, where former midfielder Xabi Alonso was keeping a close eye on his old team
"Their football is outstanding - very modern, with a lot of pace and power going forward, and moving in the right areas with players with intelligence in their movement."
Gerard Houllier incisively analysed the positive elements of the system honed by Rodgers
"I'm happy that Liverpool are coming back this season, because they are playing awesomely and they deserve to be there. It's good for the Champions League next season that Liverpool will be there."
And Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola paid a special tribute to Rodgers' charges
"I look at Anfield now and it has been a real throwback. The Kop is just in full bloom with the colours and the scarves and the flags, and the noise has just gone up another level. When it's like that, there's no greater place. As a manager, I'm so proud to manage the team in those conditions. If we can get that right from driving in - the banners and flags going in - it gives great confidence for our players, but it can also give the other team something to think about."
One of many heartfelt messages from the boss to the club's supporters for their ceaseless passion across the campaign
"The supporters have been allowed to dream this year and they will be able to continue doing that because we are going to get better."
And on the eve of the season finale, the Northern Irishman made a pledge to those fans
