Simon Mignolet did not dwell on a debut Liverpool season to remember, but instead explained how the Reds can use their recent form as a springboard from the outset of the 2014-15 campaign.

The Belgian goalkeeper was ever present in the Barclays Premier League following his summer switch from Sunderland, featuring for every minute as second place in the standings was secured.

Brendan Rodgers' effervescent team brought their exertions to a close with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on Sunday, ultimately finishing two points behind champions Manchester City.

But with the experience of a genuine race for the championship now under their belts, plus a return to the highest level of European club football booked, Mignolet already cannot wait for August.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: "Before this game, we had already secured Champions League [qualification] - that was the objective at the beginning of the season. We managed to get that.

"But fighting until the last day for the Premier League, we wanted to win it. You have to take into account where we came from and what we have achieved this year is amazing.

"So we can build on that next season and we can start on a high. There is belief now and we can start in a good way next season, and try again to compete for the Premier League."

The No.22 racked up a total of 10 clean sheets across his maiden year on Merseyside, impressing supporters with his consistent shot-stopping and reflexes between the posts.

"It has been a big journey for me since the first day," reflected the custodian. "When you arrive somewhere, the first thing you think about is to adapt.

"In my first season, playing for the Premier League until the last game of the season is something I didn't expect. I'm very pleased with the season.

"The objective of playing in the Champions League will be a new experience for me next season; I'm very pleased to be part of that and hopefully we can do even better next season."

The support provided to the players in their pursuit of a comeback against the Magpies typified the relationship between the squad and the fans, which has strengthened further this season.

Asked for a message to the voices he hears at close quarters in every match, Mignolet's request was a relatively simple one: more of the same in the future.

He said: "Just keep going. When we went behind, 1-0, they started singing for us. That puts us over the line, and sums them up for the whole season.

"From the first day until the last they have stood behind us, in good times and bad. I hope they can do it again and I'm sure they will."
