Boss: Sterling has shown he could star
There is no doubt in Brendan Rodgers' mind that Raheem Sterling is capable of successfully transferring his blistering domestic form onto the World Cup stage with England this summer.
When the final whistle of the 2013-14 campaign was blown on Sunday, the 19-year-old's tally for the previous nine months stood at 38 appearances and 10 goals for Liverpool.
Sterling's season skyrocketed back in December when an opportunity for minutes opened up and, with each passing week, the No.31's confidence - and subsequently, his incisiveness - grew.
On Monday, he was among the five Reds representatives in the Three Lions' 23-man squad for the tournament in Brazil, alongside Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Glen Johnson and Daniel Sturridge.
Reflecting on what he has witnessed at the closest of quarters since taking the reins at Anfield, Rodgers anticipates a fruitful trip to South America for the youngster next month.
"He has already shown that he can play in a league that is not just a British league but a league full of world-class, international players," said the Northern Irishman.
"His best games have been against the best teams - Arsenal, United and Manchester City - so he is more than capable.
"If he continues to have that confidence and play with no fear he could be a really stand-out player if he is asked to play that way. That is key. Raheem is an offensive player, a creative player who works hard.
"If he is given the opportunity to play how he can play, whether at the point of a diamond or on the sides, then he could be one of the stars of the World Cup.
"Let's not forget he is a 19-year-old who has been one of the top players in one of the most competitive leagues in the world."
