25 years on: An emotional cup final
25 years ago today, in 1989, Liverpool recorded a dramatic 3-2 victory over Everton to win the FA Cup at Wembley on an afternoon of huge emotion in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster.
The second all-Merseyside FA Cup final between the neighbours, arriving a mere month after 96 supporters lost their lives at the tragedy, proved an incredibly poignant affair.
Both sets of fans stood side-by-side and chanted 'Merseyside', while Gerry Marsden appeared on a podium before the game to provide an unforgettable rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.
Once the action got underway, Kenny Dalglish's charges made an explosive start to the showpiece, taking an early lead through John Aldridge, as the goal-getter netted his first ever strike for the club against the Blues.
Stuart McCall equalised with almost the last kick of the game to force extra time and the additional 30 minutes were to be even more dramatic than the preceding hour-and-a-half.
A constant nemesis of Everton, Ian Rush, having been introduced as a substitute for Aldridge, made it 2-1, only for McCall to equalise for a second time with a blistering volley.
However, the Reds were not to be denied, and the Blues' most-feared opponent, Rush, won the cup for the Reds with a neat header beyond the reach of Neville Southall.
