'Joe was brushing up the dressing room'
Respected journalist Brian Reade has revealed how Joe Fagan celebrated winning the First Division title at the end of his maiden season as manager 30 years ago - and it wasn't with a glass of bubbly.
When Liverpool drew 0-0 with Notts County at Meadow Lane to clinch the point which sealed the championship, Fagan could be found carrying out a task normally reserved for the cleaners.
As we celebrate 30 years since Fagan guided the Reds to a unique treble in 1984 on LFCTV GO and Liverpoolfc.com, Reade tells the incredible story.
"I remember two great images that sum Joe up," he explained. "I always remember when we won the league at Notts County and he was brushing up the dressing room.
"He said, 'you always leave something the way you found it'.
"You couldn't have imagined Ron Atkinson, who was Manchester United manager at the time, doing that - or Jose Mourinho today! It's beyond belief really, but there was this humble man brushing all the mess up.
"Another one of the best images over the years, because it summed up how Liverpool just got on with business as usual, is the picture of Joe at the team hotel by the swimming pool with the European Cup - it says Liverpool came and conquered."
Reade claims Fagan's achievements have not received adequate acknowledgement over the years, but insists Liverpool supporters will never forget the accomplishments of the man.
He said: "Joe wouldn't want to be remembered as a superstar. He was 'Smokin Joe' - the glue that held it all together and he was Liverpool through and through.
"He never moved out of his terrace house in Anfield. I remember him as the great uncle Joe Fagan.
"To win a treble was fantastic. We played 66 games that season which was incredible. People say you can't play twice a week these days but we played 66 that season!"
