Running the rule over the Liverpool players who will represent England at the World Cup in Brazil, former Red John Barnes focused on the crucial role allotted to captain Steven Gerrard.

The Anfield No.8 leads out the Three Lions for their opening Group D encounter, against Italy, tonight, with a young and hungry squad selected by Roy Hodgson at his side.

Given the wealth of attacking outlets available and the relative lack of experience at the highest level among the 23 players, Barnes considers Gerrard to have a more important duty than ever.

He told LFCTV GO: "No matter what you ask him to do - in any formation, any system, any style of play - he can be equally effective, because Steven has been consistent throughout his career.

"If you look at the nature of the England team now, with so many attacking players and without really having a holding midfield player, he is the only player in the squad that can do that.

"So he is probably more vital to England now than he ever has been. It is very important for Steven to be there, fit and playing all of the games."

Speaking before the Reds sealed the signing of striker Rickie Lambert, the 50-year-old was providing an exclusive rundown on the five Liverpool representatives originally selected.
