Bonner: The Ladies can't wait to go again

It's been quite a long break for us since we last played and we can't wait to get back on the pitch again.

In training there is a real buzz amongst the squad, we've had a good couple of weeks working on a few things and we are looking forward to the resumption of our title defence when we host Arsenal on Sunday.

I have to say the break did come at a good time for us. It has allowed us to get some players back fit again and improve the numbers in the squad. The game against Birmingham just before the break was probably the best we have played but the break did do us good as a squad, and hopefully now we can push on from where we left off.

We didn't have much luck in the pre-season when we lost two players for the season with ACL injuries, but the girls that have come in deserve great credit. The younger players have got their chance perhaps a lot earlier than expected, but hopefully that will stand them in good stead as well as the club with the outstanding young talent we have coming through.

I think we have to be happy with our start to the season overall. We have only played four games in the league so far and are just two points behind the leaders Birmingham. Considering the injuries and the lack of numbers we have had in the squad, we have to be pleased. We haven't lost in the league and have only conceded one goal, which was a penalty, so we have put ourselves in a good position for the rest of the season.

The massive thing for us is the team spirit, which is fantastic. Losing so many players in such a short space of time at the start of the season, other teams may have folded, so I think it's a great credit to the girls the way we have pulled through it together and worked hard for each other.

It was a boost for the team when we signed Nina Pedersen and she has settled in really well. She's a great character, which fits in with our philosophy. She can play in a number of positions across the park and that is a great thing for the manager to have and hopefully it can improve us as a team further. As the captain of this team it's important to welcome any new player that comes into the club. It's a big thing for me to be captain of Liverpool and something that makes me very proud.

Sunday's home game with Arsenal brings back great memories of our fantastic 4-0 victory at the Emirates last season. I think that game sent out a big statement to the rest of the league but it wasn't as big a surprise for us as we knew we were capable of getting a result like that. We also have to remember that Arsenal turned us over in the return game in Widnes. They might be bottom of the league at the moment but they have only played four games and they are still a great team. I don't think you can read too much into the league table at this moment in time.

Sunday will also be a big day for Gemma Davison when she plays against her former club. Gemma has been a really good addition for us as she gives us something different in attack. She has got pace to burn and it gives us a new dimension and hopefully can help to create and score more goals in the second half of the season.

As always, we are grateful to our fantastic, loyal supporters and they without question will be so crucial to us on Sunday. They give us such a lift on the pitch and we want to do them proud.

I would like to end this column with a special mention for Fara Williams, who equalled Rachel Yankey's England international caps record. It's a massive achievement for Fara and one that is fully deserved. She should be very proud of that, we are all proud of her at the club and I'm sure there will be many more caps to come.
