Ladies suffer City setback
There was frustration for Liverpool Ladies as they lost 1-0 at title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
Krystle Johnston's deflected first-half strike ensured the home side took the three points and it was cruel goal for Matt Beard's side to concede.
Having beaten City 1-0 in their opening Women's Super League game of the season, this was always going to be a tough encounter decided by the odd goal again.
Libby Stout had another fine game in goal for the Reds and she made a brilliant stop to deny Johnston as City looked for a second goal.
Gemma Davison had her moments on the day for Liverpool. One fantastic run saw her go past three defenders but her effort was superbly blocked by Steph Houghton.
Just before the break a truly outstanding save from Stout denied the dangerous Johnston again from another good City move.
After the restart England star Toni Duggan fired a good chance over the top, before Liverpool had an appeal for a penalty waved away after Fara Williams went over in the penalty area following a challenge.
The closest the Reds came to an equaliser was through Davison who fired just wide after another brilliant run, and despite six minutes of stoppage time at the end there was to be no way back for Beard's charges.
They will now hope to bounce back in their title defence when they host Chelsea on August 9 after the international break.
