Captain on title hopes and CL draw

We face another big test when we host Notts County at the Select Security Stadium on Sunday and it's another must-win game for us in the title race. The win over Chelsea in our last game a couple of weeks ago was a massive three points. It put us back in touch with the top two and keeps the pressure on Chelsea and Birmingham City. I thought that was our best performance of the season so far and it is now up to us to find that level of performance on a consistent basis until the end of the campaign.

We won't give up defending our title until it's mathematically impossible. We were in a similar situation this time last year - playing and picking up points whilst other teams around us had games in hand. If we can continue to add points to our tally, the pressure will be on Birmingham City and Chelsea with their games and with the way the league is going this season, every team is capable of taking points off each other. For us it is vital that we try gain maximum points between now and the end of the season. We have the experience from winning the title last season, which was massive for us, and we can hopefully it use to our advantage.

The top two spots are the minimum aim for us this season in order to gain qualification for the Champions League again. It is an exciting time for all of us at the club at the moment with the draw for our first game in the competition having just been made. To be involved in the draw was really exciting for the players and is definitely something we want to have the chance to experience again next season. We face the Swedish side Linkopings in the last 32. It will be a fantastic occasion for the team and it's one we are very much looking forward to in October.

Although the prospect of Champions League football is exciting for us, securing qualification again is a priority and in order to do that we must concentrate on the league. We are confident we have the capability to do that with the quality we have within the squad, especially now we have been boosted by the return of our U20 players.

Away from club football, it is an exciting time on the international front. Our result against Wales on Thursday was a great night for England as we qualified for the World Cup finals with a win. To play in a World Cup would be unbelievable. I've played at U17 and U20 level but at the senior stage it would be a dream and the whole squad can't wait for Canada 2015. For me, having the opportunity to represent your country at senior level would be a dream come true and I will be giving my all for Liverpool to give myself the best possible chance of staying in Mark Sampson's plans. 

It was also great to see the men get off to a winning start against Southampton last weekend. For me I am always looking to improve as a player by watching as many games as possible. Being a central defender I have paid particularly close attention to Dejan Lovren so far and I have been really impressed with what he brings to the side. He is a commanding figure and I think he will prove to be an excellent acquisition for the club both on and off the pitch.

We have a special promotion (click here for details) for the game on Sunday and hopefully we will get a big crowd. We hope to get as many supporters through the turnstiles as possible and it is great to see so many younger fans attending our games. The fantastic support we have received all season gives the players a real lift when we are out on the pitch so hopefully they can enjoy an entertaining game of football over their Bank Holiday weekend. I may be biased but I think our fans are the best in the league and I hope that you can all continue to turn out in your numbers again from now until the end of the season for our crucial run in.
