'I did a lap of honour in the press box'
In casting his mind back to the historic Champions League final of 2005, former Liverpool striker John Aldridge admitted he has never experienced so many different emotions in one night.
Seated in the Ataturk Stadium press box alongside Radio City commentator Steve Hothersall, he kicked every ball and was beside himself at the end of a first half that saw AC Milan take a big step to glory with a 3-0 lead.
"It was one of the worst 45 minutes of my life and I felt lower than a pig's belly!" Aldridge told Liverpoolfc.com.
"I was on my last legs. I could see us getting thumped by four, five or even six. I was thinking about the Evertonians and the Manchester United fans jumping all over the place and our fans were so down at half-time. It wasn't a nice 15 minutes, I have to say."
But come the second half, the ex-striker's loud dulcet tones almost broke the sound barrier, as Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso drew the Reds level in six incredible minutes.
Then when Jerzy Dudek saved the last penalty to secure the club's fifth European Cup, decibel levels on the Merseyside airwaves have rarely been higher.
Aldridge reflected: "I think it's still on YouTube somewhere, you can hear it for yourself with Radio City or somewhere! I just went like a lunatic.
"I threw my cans down and I did a lap of honour around the press box with Salty [presenter Paul Salt]."
As for toasting the win, amid the crazy scenes at the airport after the game, the Liverpudlian was mobbed and thrown into the air by jubilant Kopites.
He said: "I remember we were stuck in Istanbul airport waiting to go back to Liverpool and the fans picked me up and I got a few more extra laughs out of it."
