'I didn't realise we had won'
When recalling his incredible save from Andriy Shevchenko in Istanbul, the moment brings a warm smile to the face of Jerzy Dudek.
The 'big Pole in our goal', as the Kop used to sing, had produced one of the most miraculous saves ever seen in footballing theatre as he somehow denied the Ukraine superstar.
After going on to thwart two spot kicks in the deciding shoot out - including the vital one from Shevchenko that gave Liverpool their fifth European crown - Dudek's elevation into Anfield's legendary status was confirmed.
His moment of inspiration will never be forgotten by Liverpudlians - and Istanbul is one night that Dudek will always remember.
He told Liverpoolfc.com: "I was full of confidence and I have never had that much confidence in my life, to be honest. When I made that save from Shevchenko the game finished so quickly and it was down to penalties.
"I said to the goalkeeping coach Ochotorena, when you see who is taking the penalties raise your left or right hand so I can see which way they normally go.
"Then suddenly Jamie Carragher jumped on my back and grabbed hold of me telling me to put them under pressure and do something to put them off like Bruce Grobbelaar did in 1984.
"I was focused. When I went to take my position in the goal I was thinking I will try to put them off.
"The Brazilian Serginho came forward to take the first one and I was raising my hands to make the goal seem like it was smaller. He looked at me and I did my movement and he shot over the bar and I thought it seems to be working."
After saving another penalty from Andrea Pirlo and Vladimir Smicer netted to make it 3-2, it was down to Dudek against Shevchenko yet again.
He added: "When Vladi scored I didn't realise if Shevchenko didn't score we had won. I just had my focus and desire to try and stop every penalty.
"I saw him walking up and saw the fear in his eyes. I managed to save it and I then saw Jamie and the other players running towards me and I realised it was finished...it was a beautiful moment.
"Everyone came to me, the kit men, the physios and it was fantastic. There was no one single hero, we were all heroes to come back from 3-0 down and to win on penalties was something special."
