Bonner: We will never give up on title
In her latest column for Liverpoolfc.com, Liverpool Ladies skipper Gemma Bonner previews Sunday's must-win clash at Birmingham City, and explains why the team will fight for the Super League title until the very end.
It is fair to say that we were disappointed not to take all three points off our Merseyside rivals Everton in our last game - but I can promise you we won't be giving up our fight for the Women's Super League title.
We still have three games left to play and the reality is we have got to get nine points and at the same time hope someone else does us a favour. It's vital we reach our aim for this season of finishing in the top two to secure Champions League qualification again for next term.
Birmingham are up there fighting for the title, but we are only two points behind them so if we can go there and win on Sunday we will put ourselves right back in the race. That has to be our focus - to go and get the three points. But we know it will be tough.
We'll head to Birmingham in a positive frame of mind. We have just had a break due to international games but we have a game plan for Sunday and we just need to stick to that.
One thing is for certain and that is our preparation for it has been excellent. We trained well before players went away on international duty and now we are all back together as a squad we can't wait for Sunday.
The game will be live on BT Sport and it's great to get the coverage on TV. It's a massive game for both teams so hopefully it will be an exciting clash for the neutral...but more importantly for us!
We want to come out on top and our only thought is the three points. There have been a lot of twists and turns this season, and Everton's result against Birmingham put us back in with a shout, so we are hoping there will be a few more surprises still to come.
During the international break, I was delighted to be involved with England and win my fifth cap. It was great to be able to keep a clean sheet and help the team finish the qualifying campaign with maximum points, which has really whetted our appetite for the World Cup in Canada next year. The preparation for us has already started and as players we are all working very hard to keep ourselves in Mark Sampson's plans.
We face a sterner test in November when we play Germany at Wembley, which will give us a good indication for us as a team how far we have come when we face a top-class nation. Following our faultless form in qualifying, we are now ranked seventh which shows how much we have improved.
Away from the football field, we were delighted to receive an invitation to attend the premiere of the brilliant new film One Night in Istanbul last week at the ODEON in Liverpool. We had a great night and really enjoyed watching a film of a very special night in Liverpool's history. As a team we found it inspiring and also it filled us with a sense of pride at just what it means to represent Liverpool.
It was a pleasure to be there and it gave me goose bumps watching it because it shows just how much football means to the fans at this club.
