Jordan Henderson can be a source of inspiration for players looking to break into Liverpool's starting line-up, according to Brendan Rodgers.

The midfielder was this week appointed the Reds' vice-captain after firmly establishing himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet over the last two seasons.

It's testament to the tireless work and endeavour Henderson has put in on and off the pitch since Rodgers arrived at the club in 2012 - and the manager believes others can learn from his story.

"I think Jordan's story is a story of what a player can achieve if he accepts what the coach and the manager is saying," the boss told the Liverpool Echo.

"It's important that a player feels like he's going to be given that chance. A player needs to know that the words aren't hollow and be able to see they'll get the opportunity.

"We've seen that during my time here with the number of players who have maybe been outside the group and then come in, having shown the ability to learn, improve and take on board the concepts of how we want to work.

"If they do that and remain committed then they have every chance. What Jordan has done, that's something that is open for every player."

The news of Henderson's appointment was greeted with delight from all quarters on Monday, confirming his status as one of Liverpool's key components in their quest for success.

Rodgers has explained the thought process behind the decision, admitting he expects the 24-year-old to flourish with the added responsibility.

"When I called Jordan into my office and explained why I had chosen him and what the thought process was, he was very proud," he said.

"I asked him if he wanted time to think about it as it's a big responsibility but he was more than happy to accept it.

"It's a big moment for a player. Captain and vice-captain for me are very important people. They are pillars of the group.

"Sometimes they're really representing you as the coach and the manager. I've just asked Jordan to continue doing what he's doing. What the role will give him is extra responsibility.

"I think he's someone who is very much like Steven in that way. Very conscientious, very honest, very hard working, and that's all mixed in with real humility.

"I've been here now a couple of years and have had the chance to work with him closely. I just think he was someone who is made for that type of role."
