Molby: Why Rossiter joy struck a chord
Former Liverpool playmaker Jan Molby watched Jordan Rossiter's boyhood dream become a reality on Tuesday evening and understood exactly how the 17-year-old Scouser felt at Anfield.
Having been handed a debut start in the Reds' Capital One Cup tie against Middlesbrough, the young midfielder left a permanent mark on the fixture with a long-range strike on 10 minutes.
Aside from the goal, which prompted heartwarming scenes of celebration, Rossiter was composure personified on his maiden senior appearance, passing and moving the ball with style.
The moment struck a chord with Molby, famed and revered to this day by Kopites for the extensive repertoire he exhibited in possession, and the Dane was delighted on behalf of Rossiter.
He wrote in the Liverpool Echo: "There aren't many things better than seeing a young player enjoying his football. So to watch Jordan Rossiter's Liverpool debut on Tuesday night was especially enjoyable.
"I'll never forget my first professional game, for Ajax against Go Ahead Eagles. I scored that day, the fourth in a 4-1 win and it was my 'World Cup final' moment. I'm sure it was the same for young Jordan on Tuesday.
"Whatever else happens in the lad's career, that moment will never be taken away from him. I thought both he and Jordan Williams, the other debutant, acquitted themselves very well on the night."
