Emre Can has labelled Steven Gerrard as the perfect role model to help him in his quest to become a regular at Anfield.

Liverpool's No.23 is making his way back to fitness after being sidelined while picking up an injury playing for Germany U21s and is determined to show his qualities.

As he strives to return to full fitness on the training field, Can insists it's an honour for him to train alongside Gerrard at Melwood every day.

"Every young player admires Steven Gerrard and everything he has achieved in the game," said Can.

"He has stayed at the top level for so long. He is one of the best midfield players Liverpool has ever had and a great captain.

"I still admire him now the way he is able to play those long passes so accurately.

"I'm a young player who can learn so much from a player of such vast experience.

"I can pick up stuff from him in training and in games that will help me develop my game."

Another Liverpool legend who Can looks up to is his former boss at Bayer Leverkusen and Kop favourite Sami Hyypia.

He added: "I went there as a young player who needed to be given the chance to play and I'm very grateful that Sami gave me that chance.

"I know Sami is a legend here and I'm thankful for everything he did for me.

"I put the effort in during training and played better than others so I got into the team."
