Steven Gerrard will hope to strengthen an individual record by notching his 30th Champions League goal when Liverpool host Real Madrid this evening - pore over our pre-match statistics pack now.

Of all the Englishmen to play in this tournament, the Liverpool skipper is the highest scoring midfielder with 29 goals - a total which includes qualifying games.

In the European Cup and Champions League, Liverpool have played 177 matches, winning 102 of them. The Reds have drawn 37 times and been beaten on 38 occasions.

Liverpool have won five of their 15 home games against Spanish opposition, suffering four defeats. The club's record is better in Spain, where they have won on seven of their 15 visits.

The Reds have lost just one of their last 18 home games in Europe - to Udinese in 2012 in the Europa League.

Brendan Rodgers' side could record successive wins in their opening two home Champions League group games for only the second time in 10 attempts - the other occasion being during the 2006-07 season.

Of all the teams Liverpool have faced more than twice in Europe, Real are the only team not to score a goal. Only the Reds, with three matches, and Aberdeen - one game - have 100 per cent records against Madrid.

Full-back Alberto Moreno played twice against Real for Sevilla last season; he was on the winning side the last time he faced them in a 2-1 home win, after his team had been beaten 7-3 in Madrid.

Real Madrid are the European Cup's most decorated club. They have won the giant trophy on 10 occasions, including the first five, and have been beaten finalists three times. They have also lifted the UEFA Cup twice.

In lifting last season's Champions League trophy, they won 11, drew one and lost one of their matches. They scored in 12 of the games with only Roman Weidenfeller of Borussia Dortmund managing a clean sheet.

They are hoping to become the first team to retain the Champions League. The last side to do so in the European Cup era was AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, when Carlo Ancelotti was a player.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been on the winning side in three of his five Anfield appearances with Manchester United, and has scored twice in nine matches against the Reds in all competitions.

Ancelotti has managed a team against Liverpool six times in his career, with three victories and three defeats - winning two and losing two at Chelsea, and winning and losing a Champions League final with AC Milan.
