Alonso, who spent five years at Anfield and forged a strong bond with the Kop, completed his move to Bayern Munich from Real Madrid in the summer and has since gone on to shine for the German club.

He's something of a fans' favourite already there and it's easy to see why - Xabi recently broke the Bundesliga record for most touches of the ball in a single game, when he made an astonishing 206 against Cologne in September.

At Anfield, his exquisite passing range was what immediately endeared him to Kopites after he arrived from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2004 as part of an influx of Spaniards, headed up by newly installed manager, Rafael Benitez.

He will forever be remembered for halfway-line strikes, phenomenal composure and range - and, of course, the crucial equalising goal in normal time as Liverpool achieved the greatest comeback in footballing history against AC Milan in 2005.

Four years on from the Champions League triumph, Xabi departed for Real Madrid, where he would go on to add the La Liga, Champions League and two Copa del Rey titles to his trophy cabinet during a five-year spell.

The Spaniard signalled his intent to swell such an honours list further when he signed for Bayern in August this year, on the same day his two former clubs Liverpool and Real were drawn together in the Champions League.
