Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool are working tirelessly to regain the kind of home form that made Anfield a fortress in the Barclays Premier League last season.

The Reds dropped just eight points in front of the Kop in 2013-14, but have so far this campaign already been held to draws by Everton and Hull City as well as losing to Aston Villa.

Rodgers believes a improved record on home soil will be key to reigniting the season - and feels an electric atmosphere can help inspire his players in this afternoon's mouthwatering clash with Chelsea.

"I still believe Anfield is a difficult place to come but we want to improve our home form," the boss told the Liverpool Echo.

"Once we get our rhythm back and we get a run of wins then it will make it hopefully similar to last year.

"It's been a mixture of things really. Teams now are fully aware of our qualities. They come to Anfield not to lose so that makes it more difficult for us at home.

"But we've shown signs of what we can do. We have had good results at Anfield against Southampton and West Brom.

"If you look at the Southampton game, it was deemed not a great performance at the time but they have only conceded five league goals so far and we scored two of them.

"I've got to say the fans have been brilliant and against big opponents they really give us a massive lift.

"We will require that again against Chelsea. Hopefully between the players, the staff and the fans we can all combine to get a big three points."

Victory for Liverpool against table-topping Chelsea would move them level on points with fourth-placed Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League.

"Despite everything, we are still within touching distance of where we want to be in terms of the top four," added Rodgers.

"There is still a long, long way to go this season yet. For us it's going to click sooner rather than later.

"One thing that hasn't changed from all the players has been their commitment. We've not been at our fluent best so far this season but it's certainly not for a lack of effort."

Expanding on why he believes Liverpool have been unable to so far match the stunning heights they set themselves last term, Rodgers pinpointed a decreased number of goals.

However, the Northern Irishman outlined how the Reds are undertaking tactical work at Melwood to help them begin finding the back of the net on a more consistent basis.

Rodgers said: "Goals give teams confidence. If you look at where we're at, we haven't conceded many more than Chelsea who are deemed a real force defensively. They have conceded 10, we have conceded 13.

"Where there is a big difference is in goals scored. That is something we had last season.

"Without whining or complaining, when you lose players of the calibre we have in that area of the field, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out why we haven't scored as many.

"I don't have a magic wand to give us those goals, but we will continue to work hard to find the solutions for that.

"We'll work on movement patterns in training which will help us to do that.

"I am pleased that the confidence in our game is returning. At Newcastle it wasn't so good, but against Swansea we played well and the speed of our game was good.

"I thought against Real Madrid we put in a good performance - a different type of performance compared to my teams usually.

"We showed we've got that resilience and character to defend well, even against the best team in the world. We have to keep working as I know we will get better."
