'Early wing role gave me attacking sense'
Alberto Moreno credits a stint on the wing during earlier playing days as the key factor behind his instinctive tendencies to surge forward from full-back.
Those with a front-row seat in the Main and Centenary Stands at Anfield this season have grown accustomed to seeing the Spaniard storm up the sidelines in order to supplement his side's attacking sorties.
Away fans in Tottenham Hotspur's South and West Stands saw him light up White Hart Lane in late August with a similar energetic charge, capped by a cool, raking finish for his first Liverpool goal.
Moreno is targeting more strikes this campaign and intends to create extra goalscoring opportunities, too, having already fashioned Mario Balotelli's maiden strike for the club against Ludogorets Razgrad.
However, the 22-year-old also acknowledges that there must be a balance - and he's determined to shore up defensively, while continuing to offer an offensive threat for Brendan Rodgers' side.
"All players love to score goals, especially me, because when I was younger I used to score regularly as I played further forward back then," Moreno told Liverpoolfc.com.
"When I was a kid I played more as a winger or a wide attacking midfielder - not as a full-back. But I always like to score goals and above all, provide assists, which is what an attacking full-back has to do.
"As we stand, I'm on one goal and an assist in 12 games, so I think I'm aiming at getting more than five goals and five assists."
Asked where he felt he could improve his game over the coming months, Moreno responded: "Maybe defensively. I'm a very attack-minded full-back.
"I'm also very young and I've still got a lot to learn. Playing with these players, I'm bound to learn and also playing in this highly competitive league I'm going to learn a lot also."
While his inclination to attack from deep was forged during days spent as a winger, Moreno insists his aggressive nature has been nurtured by Reds boss Rodgers since he brought him to the club from Spain.
"When we are about to go out, he always says to me to get forward and attack as much as I can but to be aware that as a full-back that I have to defend as well," said Moreno.
"The fundamental job of a defender is to defend, but at the first opportunity I should get forward and create problems further up the pitch."
