Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson holds optimism that the Reds' new-look backline can begin to link effectively as they spend more time fine-tuning their combination in training.

Brendan Rodgers recruited Dejan Lovren, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno in the summer to replenish his rearguard in preparation for a season fighting in four different competitions.

Just two clean sheets had been recorded before the international break, but Lawrenson insists that any teething problems will not be a result of a lack of endeavour or ability in the ranks.

Though he would develop into a composed and assured centre-half during his prime at Anfield, his maiden campaign actually garnered only a single victory from his first four starts in league football.

Nevertheless, by the conclusion of 1981-82 Lawrenson had clocked up 39 appearances in the division as Liverpool surged to another championship success by four points.

He is therefore inclined to preach patience on behalf of those currently tasked with defending the Reds' goal and explained how shut-outs could become regularity in the weeks to come.

"It's not a lack of ability and it's not a lack of working on the problems on the training ground and trying to iron them out - that will happen, you know that will happen," Lawrenson told Liverpoolfc.com.

"As much as anything, it's communication. We have got Manquillo, Moreno and Lovren as new players; they will all be in the position that we have all been in before of trying to justify your ability.

"When the team is not playing well, everything is exaggerated. Start scoring a few goals, start winning games and I do think the rest will come."
