Brad Smith, Jordan Williams, Lloyd Jones and Ryan McLaughlin paid a special visit to Alder Hey hospital to switch on the Christmas lights and spread some festive cheer.

The Academy quartet joined young ambassadors of Alder Hey Children's Charity Freddy Barker, Erin Cross, Grace Lee, Sam and Amy-Jo Penkethman Owens, Ted McCaffery and Huzaifah Valli plus Everton legends Graeme Sharp, Graham Stuart and Ian Snodin.

They started the Christmas celebrations at the hospital and sang carols with patients and staff before switching on the Christmas lights.

BBC Radio Merseyside presenter Sean Styles hosted the event, which also included performances from Alder Hey's staff choir and the Wirral Grammar School for Girls band.

There was also a chance for the patients to have a photograph with Father Christmas and his reindeer.

Liverpool U21s skipper Jones said: "We regularly come and visit the children at Alder Hey, so it was fantastic to have been invited to be a part of the Christmas light switch-on with the young ambassadors.

"We can't wait to come along later this month to deliver some special Christmas treats to the kids here and to help make Christmas time as best an experience possible for them."

This is Alder Hey's last Christmas in its current buildings as it prepares to move into a new hospital in 2015.

Louise Shepherd, Alder Hey's chief executive, said: "Christmas at Alder Hey is particularly special this year as this will be the last time we celebrate it in our current buildings.

"Our Christmas light switch on always signals that Christmas at Alder Hey has begun and I'm looking forward to seeing our patients and families there.

"As always our staff will be working incredibly hard to make Christmas time as nice as it can be for our patients here and hopefully some of them will also have the chance to bring their families along to join in the festive fun."
