Jordan Henderson has backed Lazar Markovic to bounce back from his midweek dismissal against FC Basel and prove his quality in a red shirt.

The Serbian international made a lively entrance at half-time during the Champions League clash only to be harshly shown a straight red card after he was adjudged by the referee to have used a high arm under pressure from Behrang Safari.

Despite the setback, Liverpool's vice-captain believes he will soon start to show the Kop just what a talented player he really is.

"Lazar's a fantastic player who's got great potential," Henderson said.

"In training we see the quality of the players that we've got in the group and I thought he was brilliant when he came on the other night.

"He was a real threat and possibly changed things in our favour, especially going forward because he looked really sharp. But, unfortunately, with the sending-off it came to an end. Hopefully he can take confidence from that, kick on and start doing it on a more consistent basis."

Liverpool's No.14 admitted he will do all he can to help Markovic adjust to life at Anfield, citing his own personal experience as a good example.

He added: "When I came to Liverpool I found it difficult for the first year-and-a-half but I've always said that I wouldn't rather have not had that time because it was crucial in my development and I'm better for it now.

"I'm a better player and a better person. That time will definitely help me and I've got to help others in the team to deal with it the way that we need to progress and become a better team.

"I know what it's like to go through that so I need to take more responsibility with the new signings who've come in and try to make them feel as good as possible and as confident as possible when they're going out on the pitch."

Liverpool head into Sunday's showdown with Manchester United determined to get back to winning ways in the top flight and restore confidence after the Champions League exit.

Henderson claims the Reds are more than capable of getting a good result against Louis van Gaal's side and points to last season's 3-0 victory at Old Trafford as a benchmark of what can be achieved on the day.

"We have to go there with the same mentality we showed in March," said the midfielder. "Of course people are going to criticise when things aren't going well and we have to take that on the chin. As players we have to go out there and prove people wrong.

"The confidence is still within the group because each day we see the quality we have. We have got great character so that is enough for us to go there and get a good result.

"I think you always have to prove something in football. It doesn't matter if you are flying or not. Last season we had to try to prove to people we could challenge for the league.

"People were doubting us at the start of last season but we had to prove people wrong and this is no different. Sunday is a great opportunity because you go there and win the game and all of a sudden it changes. We've got to have the belief we can go there and get a good result.

"We can definitely go there and get a good result. It's all well and good me sitting here and saying that but it's up to us to go and do the business."
