A Liverpool Academy U12s side finished in third place at the Barclays Premier League's Christmas Truce International Tournament in Ypres, Belgium at the weekend.

The young Reds were invited into the competition after reaching the final of the annual Christmas Truce National Tournament at the same location in November, where they were beaten by Chelsea.

The trip was about much more than football, however, as a number of events were organised away from the pitch to commemorate one of the most unique acts in the history of war.

It was a century ago, around Christmas Day 1914, that soldiers involved in World War I temporarily ceased fighting along the Western Front in a show of humanity that included the playing of football on no man's land.

A runners-up position last month carried Liverpool into a follow-up competition, back in Ypres, that featured the Blues again as well as outfits from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Scotland.

Victories over Rapid Vienna, Borussia Monchengladbach and Paris Saint-Germain helped the Reds reach the semi-finals, were they were once more undone by Chelsea, on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Anderlecht were the opponents in a subsequent play-off for third place, which ended in a goalless stalemate, prompting another spot-kick contest that brought a 4-3 success for the Reds.
