Liverpool took a 'step in the right direction' by stylishly overturning Bournemouth on Wednesday night to stand them in good stead for the weekend clash with Arsenal, believes Adam Lallana.

For much of the contest at the Goldsands Stadium, the Reds were in the ascendancy - dominance that was reflected by the 3-0 scoreline they'd accomplished with less than an hour played as they displayed no signs of a hangover from Sunday's disappointing defeat by Manchester United.

Raheem Sterling headed Brendan Rodgers' side in front to cap an outstanding team move that was almost 40 passes in the making.

Lazar Markovic's first goal for the club doubled the visitors' lead before Sterling clinically added his second of the evening after half-time.

Dan Gosling did reduce the arrears for Bournemouth and though there were one or two heart-in-mouth moments for the travelling Kop as the tie reached its crescendo, Liverpool were able to book their place in the last four and set up a semi-final showdown with Chelsea.

Lallana told Liverpoolfc.com: "We're delighted. We're in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup, and that's what we were after. We were very disappointed after the United game and we wanted to put it right against Bournemouth.

"Although there were encouraging signs going forward at Old Trafford, we knew coming to Bournemouth - who are top of the Championship - was going to be a tough game.

"I thought we implemented ourselves brilliantly in the first half, took control of the game, got two goals and settled ourselves down nicely.

"We had our gameplan and I thought we did it well. The two goals settled us down, but it was still difficult from then onwards - we had to put in a professional performance as Bournemouth caused us a few problems in the second half. It's a tough place to come and they're flying at the moment."

Next up for Lallana and co is an Anfield clash with Arsenal in front of the television cameras on Sunday.

The England midfielder believes Liverpoool's result and performance on the south coast means they'll head into that encounter in buoyant mood.

"This was a small step in the right direction and we'll take it into the game on Sunday," he added.

"We were so dominant in the first half, but they were always going to come out and have a bit of a spell in the second half. It was important we got the third goal because if it'd been 2-0 and they'd got their goal, it would have been an interesting last 20 minutes.

"It's a good bit of momentum we'll pick up. We'll take a lot of confidence out of the performance. I thought Raheem was brilliant again - it was great to get him among the goals. We've been short in that area, but he's done a fantastic job for us."

Lallana also reserved words of praise for Markovic, whose goal was the pinnacle of an overall impressive performance.

"I thought Markovic was brilliant," said the Reds' No.20. "He was playing in a different role as well, but he took his goal very well and looked very assured on the ball. There were very encouraging signs."
