Steven: This game can be another catalyst
The last time Steven Gerrard called upon Liverpool to close the gap on Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League it was February 2014 and the Reds were about to demolish the Gunners with a flurry of five goals.
Arsene Wenger's charges arrived on Merseyside at the top of the table back then, eight points clear of Liverpool; however, four strikes in the first 20 minutes of the game put paid to the pre-match predictions that the visitors were about to extend their dominance.
Prior to the encounter, Gerrard told Liverpoolfc.com of the boost a potential three points would bring - but perhaps not even the captain himself could have foreseen the rampaging, 11-game winning streak that the 5-1 victory would inspire.
Gerrard knows Brendan Rodgers' team are in a much different position 10 months on, even if the gap between themselves and the Gunners is shorter now than in February, with five points separating the two sides.
The skipper still feels today's match can be a catalyst of sorts, should the Reds manage to inflict defeat on Arsenal - and he believes there's enough quality within the Liverpool ranks for that to be achieved.
"We're still moving forward, I really believe that," said Gerrard. "I'm the first to admit it's been tough this season, it's been a bit of a roller-coaster. We aren't where we want to be in the table and nobody is happy about that.
"But we're determined to put it right. It will take time. But I have that belief that we'll get it right and we will get there. If we can come through a big game against Arsenal and get a win then that could be the catalyst for us to go on a run of results.
"We are a strong dressing room with a good manager - it will only be a matter of time before we turn it around. I've got confidence it will happen - and hopefully it will start with a victory over Arsenal because that could really kick-start things for us.
"There are a lot of league games over the Christmas period. So if you can string three or four wins together it can get you up there knocking on the door. We've got to keep fighting for that because it's so important to this club. That's the main aim, no doubt about it."
