Liverpool Ladies today announced that club captain Gemma Bonner has signed a new contract with the reigning Women's Super League champions.

Central defender Bonner has penned a new deal with the Reds after playing a crucial role in Matt Beard's side's successive title victories in 2013 and 2014.

The 23-year-old was ever present at the heart of the defence last season, leading the Reds to their second consecutive WSL triumph following a 3-0 final day victory against Bristol Academy.

The Ladies' skipper joined the club from Chelsea Ladies in 2012, having previously worked with Beard while with the West London outfit.

On signing her contract extension, Bonner said: "I am absolutely delighted to have signed a new contract with Liverpool Ladies. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I'm sure we can win many more trophies over the next few seasons.

"The team spirit here is brilliant and, in my opinion, was the main reason why we managed to retain the Women's Super League title last season.

"The prospect of competing in the UEFA Women's Champions League again is also an exciting one and I cannot wait for the season to restart."

Ladies manager Beard also spoke of his delight at securing the future of the club captain, commenting: "I am absolutely thrilled that Gemma has committed her future to Liverpool Ladies.

"She has been one of the key reasons for our success over the last two seasons and her new deal is a key one for the club. Not only is she a leader with her performances on the pitch, but she leads by example off the pitch and is well respected by her fellow teammates."
