Emre pledges zero let-up in league race
There will be no let-up in Liverpool's pursuit of a higher position, pledged Emre Can, as the Reds attempt to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches at Villa Park today.
Brendan Rodgers' side have not been defeated since December 14, winning five and drawing two in all competitions since a harsh reversal at Old Trafford last month.
The 1-0 victory at Sunderland a week ago moved Can and co to within five points of the Barclays Premier League's top four positions as the season enters its second half.
Positive results have allowed confidence to grow within the squad that the gap to the Champions League qualification places can be further diminished in the coming weeks.
So it is no surprise to hear Can insist that Liverpool must take to the field against Aston Villa this afternoon with no thought of what has gone and only the task ahead.
"We can't afford to let up just because we haven't lost for a few games," the German, who has started the past four fixtures, explained to Liverpoolfc.com.
"We need to continue to work hard in training and push on for good results in the matches, we need to carry on playing well and amass as many points as we can.
"It is very easy to slip down the league. We need to remain focused and continue to play the way we have over the past few weeks. Perhaps we are the favourites but in the Premier League every team can beat each other.
"We need to remain focused on the game on Saturday and every player has to give 100 per cent. We need to put in a performance to win the match."
The manager has recently fielded Can as a member of Liverpool's three-man backline, taking advantage of the No.23's composure and awareness.
Today's contest could bring the 21-year-old into direct confrontation with Villa striker Christian Benteke, who can boast four goals in as many games against the Reds.
"I look forward to every test in the Premier League and playing against every opponent and any striker," was Can's analysis. "I will give it 100 per cent and then we will see what happens and which team takes the points."
