Raheem Sterling insists he is thriving in the central striker role for Liverpool - and the youngster intends to hone his attacking instincts further over the coming months.

Sterling showed tremendous pace and poise as he surged through Chelsea's ranks to strike at the Kop end and level the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg at Anfield on Tuesday.

It was the 20-year-old's seventh goal of the current campaign, his fourth since being pushed into the lone forward role at the head of a revamped 3-4-3 formation first deployed against Manchester United at Old Trafford in December.

Sterling is relishing the challenge of leading the line flanked by two playmakers - and the No.31 wants to learn all the traits required to flourish in the position, while improving his composure in front of goal.

"It's a role that I am learning and adapting to," Sterling said. "But if you want to be a good player, it is something you've got to do, you've got to adapt and play in different positions.

"I want to learn as much as I can, and I'm enjoying it at the moment. It's good for me. I have personal goals, but I don't want to share them in case I don't reach them. I always set myself goals and standards that I want to meet, and this season is no different.

"When I get in front of goal, sometimes I can get a bit excited thinking I've done it all. But I just have to keep focused, and work hard to try to take my game to the next level by getting more goals and assists."

Sterling's equaliser means the Capital One Cup semi-final tie hangs in the balance ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge against Jose Mourinho's men next Tuesday.

Before then, the Reds will turn their attentions to the FA Cup and the visit of Neil Lennon's Bolton Wanderers on Saturday - and Sterling insists the weekend's game takes precedence now as thoughts of Chelsea are banished until the return fixture.

"That's the most important game now," he said. "Hopefully we can get the win there, then go into next week's game at Stamford Bridge and get the result we need.

"We played very well against Chelsea, and were really composed. The other young lads like Emre [Can] and Lazar [Markovic] did really well. They were comfortable on the ball and really assured.

"We just hope we can take this into the game on Saturday."
