Kop favourite Alan Kennedy and former Everton hero Graham Stuart joined forces to back an inaugural running event to remember the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough.

The legends showed their support for 'Run For The 96 5K', which is set to take place in April, when they met at the Isla Gladstone Conservatory in Stanley Park on Tuesday.

They stood side-by-side on Merseyside derby week and encouraged others to sign up for the event, in order to raise funds for the Liverpool FC Foundation and Everton in the Community.

Participants are invited to walk, jog or run as they remember the fans lost at the disaster, their families and the survivors. The route takes in Stanley Park, with Anfield and Goodison Park providing the backdrop.

Supported by the Hillsborough Family Support Group, 'Run For The 96 5K' takes place on April 19 at 9.30am and all finishers will receive a commemorative medal and T-shirt.

Participants are invited to fundraise for the Liverpool FC Foundation and Everton in the Community, the charitable arms of the city's two football clubs, to enable them to continue their fantastic work across Merseyside.

Such fundraising is a key part of the event's commitment to ensuring that local communities benefit from the legacy run. All funds donated or raised will be split equally between the two charities.

Former Reds left-back, Kennedy, played for Liverpool from 1978 to 1985 and made 359 appearances for the club, scoring the winning goals in two European Cup finals.

He said: "I am delighted to be a part of 'Run For The 96 5K'. It promises to be a fantastic event and will help to raise funds for the two club charities, which will enable them to continue providing opportunities for young people and adults throughout the city."

Andrea Cooper, head of Liverpool FC Foundation, said: "We are proud to be supporting 'Run For The 96 5K' and helping to remember those who lost their lives at the Hillsborough disaster."

The entry fee to take part in 'Run For The 96 5K' is £20 (£22 online). The entry fee will pay to stage and deliver all aspects of the event, which was devised by Dom Williams.

A lifelong Liverpool fan, Dom has staged the three-day Hillsborough-Anfield 96-mile team running challenge for the past three years.
