Simon Mignolet warned that Liverpool are only halfway to completing their mission of reaching the last 16 of the Europa League by overcoming Besiktas.

The Reds hold a 1-0 advantage against the Turkish side following the first leg on Thursday night, when Mario Balotelli came off the bench to hit a penalty winner.

Next week the two will meet again, at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, with Mignolet immediately targeting a similarly resolute and calm European performance.

"We wanted to take an advantage into the second leg and we have done that," the goalkeeper told Liverpoolfc.com inside Anfield.

"1-0 is a good result, especially a clean sheet in the first leg. Hopefully we can do the business away in Istanbul and make sure that we get through.

"We're still far away from making sure we go into the next round. We'll recover well.

"First we have got the Premier League game against Southampton, which will be tough as well, then we'll travel to Turkey to make sure that we get to the next stage.

"They are a very good, organised team - a good side. We knew it was going to be difficult. But we managed to keep a clean sheet and scored the penalty.

"1-0 was a good result and hopefully we can do the same again. First we have the game against Southampton, which we'll recover for and make sure we prepare for that. After that, we'll get ready for the game in Istanbul."

Crucial to Mignolet claiming his sixth clean sheet of 2015 was a superb save made by the No.22 to deny Besiktas forward Demba Ba 10 minutes before the interval.

The Senegal international was primed to sweep a shot beyond the 'keeper, only to see a strong palm stretch out and direct the ball away from danger.

He reflected: "You know as a goalkeeper that you always have to be ready to help the team at certain moments.

"Apart from that, I didn't have much to do - we defended really well again. We have to keep that going.

"It's always nice to keep a clean sheet and always important when you play the first leg at home. We're pleased with that. But nothing is done yet - we have to make sure that we finish the job over there."

Sandwiched in between the two-legged Europa League encounter is an important Barclays Premier League journey to high-flying Southampton.

The Reds will look to close the gap to the Saints to a single point on Sunday with a win at St Mary's, and focus has already turned to that match.

"You want to keep going if you have the momentum and confidence," Mignolet added. "It's going to be a tough game.

"They are a very tough side, very organised and don't concede many goals. We'll try to make sure that away at Southampton we do our jobs again and get a good result."
